SMC
The Russ Anderson/SMC Figure 8 with ears is one of the most popular full-sized descenders used by professionals throughout the rescue, fire service and police/tactical markets. Machined from 1/2” thick, solid aluminum, heat-treated bar and then finished with a very tough, hard-anodized finish in either grey or black. This is the smaller of two sizes and is ideal for working with a single or a double wrap of up to 1/2” diameter rope. Adding ”ears” to this design helps to eliminate the potential for ropes slipping up into a girth hitch and also make it easier to ”tie off” when on rappel. The carabiner hole doubles as a belay plate for up to 1/2” rope. The center hole allows you to rig the 8 without unclipping it from your harness. All SMC NFPA products are third party tested (by Underwriters Laboratories - UL) as required by NFPA 1983 (2001 edition) standards. All SMC NFPA products are stamped with the required certification information and the user information is enclosed with each item as required by NFPA.

Originally designed as a personal escape device for firefighters in bailout situations, this ultralight and compact descender is now the personal choice of countless members of SAR and Ski Patrol teams, law enforcement and military around the globe. Its compact size and lightweight makes it convenient to pack in a turnout coat or bail-out kit. For that matter just ask the growing number of savvy canyoneers who have chosen it as their descender, knowing that it is optimized for the smaller diameter ropes they’ve helped become so popular. By using extensive computer analysis and field testing to optimize geometry we’ve designed this descender so that it works extremely well on single and double ropes up to 7.5 mm, and yet can be used on single ropes up to 12.5 mm. Single or double wrap allows the right amount of friction needed for a fast, yet controlled descent. The ears help to minimize the training required for using this descender. CNC machined from 3/8” thick aircraft aluminum. Color choices are gold or black for tactical applications. All SMC NFPA products are third party tested (by Underwriters Laboratories - UL) as required by NFPA 1983 (2001 edition) standards. All SMC NFPA products have the required certification information stamped on the item and the user information is enclosed with each item as required by NFPA. Weight: 1.7oz (48.2g) Dimensions: 2.8" x 2.73" x 0.375" Material: Anodized aluminum Strength: 3,147 lbf - 14kN (3 Sigma) Specifications: NFPA ”E” - Escape Device requirement of 13.5kN
